Ah, the choices we face, fast or slow, steady or volatile, hot or cold… well how about the age old question of Quantity or Quality? This overriding theme hits us on almost every facet of our life as we grow from young too old and yes, it is true that as we travel through this journey of life and move from information to knowledge, knowledge to wisdom, many times people also migrate from quantity to quality. Each of the Five Paths has a quantity versus quality side to it and understanding where you sit on that scale can help be part of making you live a more fulfilled life.
On the Physical Path, the “Q Issue” is apparent in everything from what we eat to how we work out to even the medicines we employ to help bring us back when our path is detoured. Kids are notorious for looking excitedly at a buffet and all the food they can pile on their plate whereas adults tend to only pick some of what they want. In training programs, it has recently come into the knowledge-base that a :30-minute exercise can be every bit as beneficial as a one-hour session if things are done properly.
When it comes to the Emotional Path the “Q Issue” is more complicated. Yes, it’s true that we would generally prefer a few good emotionally supportive friends than a whole group of people who aren’t really there for us. And yes, a deep powerful love can be superior to a general feeling of affirmation offered to a group. But with that said, to have both quality of love and support and some measure of the quantity of love and support is the goal most of us strive for.
Intellectually we also face the “Q Issue” as we work to become not an “Inch deep and a mile wide” but rather a “Mile deep and a mile wide”. We can only achieve both breadth and depth in the Intellectual Path if we are adhering to a belief in “life-long learning”.
Spirtual development also can be fully realized if we don’t address the “Q Issue”. Yes, it’s nice to have a broad overriding view of religion but seeking truth requires a Quality approach to learning. We must go deep into the history and the language of the scriptures with an open mind to truly extract from them the intent of an all-powerful, ever-living God. Quantity of study is good, quantity with quality is super-good.
And the financial path can all be about the “Q Issue”. Many businesses have failed because their CEO’s were spread too thin and rather than doing the best quality in all operations, they push for increased quantity and while sales do rise in the near term, in the long term a lack of quality will stifle a business. The same is true in investing, depth is frequently superior to breadth although that flies in the face of the “diversify” crowd. I subscribe to Peter Lynch’s comment (the once head of the giant Fidelity Magellan Fund) when he said a better word than diversification is “diworseification”.
Traveling your journey of life has many facets and often you will have to make your decisions about things based on the “Q Issue”. Knowing what you want as your goal can help mitigate the confusion that this brings about. But knowing your goal, that can be difficult in and of itself. Devote time to thinking about the “Q Issue”. Where are you on it? How can this be applied to your world and to the things you need to get done. How, can understanding yourself lead to a more fulfilled life?
